Updating your Moodle module (1) – “How do I organise the General section?”

Ensure that the General section has limited content. The student will have to scroll past the General section regardless of which Unit/Week section they choose to go to so it must be kept short. 

General section (top of the course page)

Replace the placeholder text in the Course summary section (at the top of the course) with a brief overview of what the course will cover/set the context. Maximum two sentences.

Ideally, the General Section should include only the:

  • ‘Announcements’ forum
  • ‘How do I navigate this site?’ screencast for students*

*We will include a short screencast which explains how to navigate the course. You may replace it with your own tailored screencast if you wish. You may choose to remove the screencast after a few weeks, once the students have become familiar with course navigation.

General section: Recommended:

General section: Not recommended:

Not recommended: The General section showing many course activities and resources with descriptions.
Figure B: The student will have to scroll past the General section regardless of which Unit/Week section they choose to go to so it must be kept short. Don’t include descriptions. Activities/Resources such as ‘Attendance’ and ‘Office Hours’ can be moved to the ‘Module Information’ section or the appropriate Unit/Week section.
